There is a massive spectrum of ways that people can get involved in running, either on their own, in small groups or via clubs. Organisations like Park Run set up supportive opportunities to get out and run for fun. There are also a myriad of more competitive levels from Junior to Elite pro.
The recent attempt at a sub 2-hour marathon was paid for by a shoe company who built a special product for the attempt. For most of us we want a stable and comfortable platform to allow us to meet our goal for the run and make it an enjoyable experience.
